I would like to begin my talk with a rather provocative statement.While it is clear to me that Chinese students pursuing music scholarship,be it musicology,music theory,or ethnomusicology,are often quite eager to attend college and graduate school in the United States and study western traditions,the reverse is not as true.That is,not many American students are electing to study Chinese musical traditions,which are extremely rich and which shed so much light on the development of music history.I hope we can make some progress at this forum in discovering why and can perhaps suggest some steps to help facilitate better exchange.
